A domain name is your unique internet address. Most internet sites register with
the InterNIC which issues domains under the .com (commercial), .org
(non profit), .net (network infrastructure), .gov (US federal government),
.tv (television), and .info (information) are top level domains. There
are also top level domains for every country, such as .ca (Canada), .us
(United States), and .uk (United Kingdom).
Domain names tend to be memorable so that people can find and return to your site.
For example, if your organization was Widgets, Inc you would probably choose widgets.com.

CNG Internet can / will register your domain for you. (You may register the domain
yourself; or move a registered domain to us.) The cost of domain registrations depends
on the number of years registered, reflecting savings for multiyear registrations.

You do. Domains are registere to either an individual or company who will then own
the domain. You need to have ownership information at hand as you register a domain.
The only time you lose ownership is if you fail to renew your domain registration.

First, try to contact the person who registered your domain and have that person
change the e-mail address. The e-mail address must belong to someone who can authorize
the transfer for you. If that fails, send us a fax. The fax must be on company letterhead with the following text:
The reason for the transfer is [state the reason]
Once the transfer is completed, CNG Internet can make any other contact changes
you require.

14. Can I have a domain like "newyork.mydomain.com"?
|
Yes, these are "pointer" domains. If the link ("newyork") points
to the same web-site as the standard "www.mydomain.com"
the new entry is for free. If the "newyork.mydomain.com" must point to
a different domain you will need to establish a new domain account with CNG Internet.
(additional registration fee apply).

15. What about trademarks when I register
a domain?
|
Internic (and all other domain registrars) are taking a hands-off approach. It is
up to the courts to decide what infringes on a trademark. Courts have even sided
with holders of trademarks when the "domain" just sounds like the defending
trademark. Just do your research, and stay clear of "similar" names, even
if you are in an entirely different "industry". You do not want to lose
your domain after you have promoted it. (Aside from court-costs that you will pay
if you can't defend the domain name).
